Feeling safe where you live is a basic human need. A new report shows where people around the world feel most secure. On September 19, 2068, international news sources shared findings from the Gallup Global Safety Report 2025. This study highlights countries where citizens feel especially safe, even when walking alone at night.
For the twelfth time since 2006, Singapore has topped the list as the safest nation. A remarkable 98% of Singaporeans surveyed said they feel safe walking by themselves after dark. This consistent performance speaks volumes about the city-state’s dedication to public order.
The report also pointed out other top contenders for safety. Tajikistan came in second, with 95% of its people feeling safe. China and Oman both tied with 94%, followed closely by Saudi Arabia. In contrast, only 71% of people in the United States reported feeling safe during nighttime walks. This shows a notable difference in personal security perceptions globally.
Within Southeast Asia, the situation varies. Thailand scored 70% in the survey. This places it near the global average, which sits at 73%. Thailand’s score is better than Malaysia’s 58%. However, it still trails behind Indonesia, where 83% of people feel safe.
Singapore’s ongoing success in safety isn’t just luck. The report credits several factors. These include a very low crime rate and strong law enforcement. A general sense of peace and order in society also helps. Singapore scored 95 out of 100 on the latest Law and Order Index. This put it just two points behind Tajikistan.
The Gallup survey gathers views from a wide range of people. Over 145,000 adults in 144 countries and regions took part. The findings show a positive trend worldwide. In 2024, 73% of people felt safe walking alone at night. This is the highest percentage recorded since the survey began in 2006.
