Trump Threatens DC National Emergency Amid ICE Dispute with Mayor Bowser

Former President Donald Trump recently issued a strong warning. He stated he would declare a national emergency in Washington D.C. and seize federal control. This threat comes if Mayor Muriel Bowser continues to block cooperation with federal immigration officials.

The disagreement centers on local authorities sharing information about people living in the country without legal permission. Trump’s suggestion of a federal takeover has sparked concerns about overreaching power. Already, around 2,000 military personnel patrol the capital city.

Trump’s latest comments follow large protests earlier this month. Thousands marched against his decision in August to send in federal forces. He had ordered them to “restore law, order, and public safety.” He called the crime situation in D.C. a “catastrophe” at that time.

On his Truth Social platform, Trump claimed a major success. He wrote, “This ‘place’ has definitely been thriving in recent weeks… For the first time in decades, there is almost ‘no crime.'” His message suggests the federal presence has been effective.

Mayor Bowser’s office did not immediately respond to Trump’s social media post. However, Trump previously ordered the city’s police force to report directly to the federal government. He also sent federal law enforcement, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, to patrol city streets. There’s no clear end date for their mission.

Trump pinned the blame on “radical left Democrats.” He said they pressured Mayor Bowser to stop cooperating with ICE. He added a stark warning: if police stop working with ICE, “crime will return fiercely.”

He also directly addressed the city’s residents and businesses. “To the people and businesses of Washington D.C., don’t worry. I am with you,” he posted. “I will not let this happen. I will declare a National Emergency and take Federal Control, if necessary!!!”

Interestingly, Mayor Bowser had previously praised Trump’s increase in federal law enforcement. She noted a significant drop in crime after the boost. She even signed an order for the city to coordinate with federal agencies. The National Guard acts as a military reserve for states, but D.C.’s National Guard reports directly to the President.
