Qarabag’s Kady Optimistic for Champions League Opener Versus Benfica

The Champions League anthem stirs something deep inside every footballer, a dream whispered on dusty pitches and shouted in packed stadiums. For Azerbaijan’s Qarabag, that dream finally returns tomorrow. This will be their second dance in the group stage, a hard-won entry after years of trying. Their first appearance was back in the 2017/18 season.

They face a tough test right away: Portuguese giants Benfica, playing at their famous Estádio da Luz. Kick-off is set for 8 PM. Kady, a Brazilian attacking midfielder, stepped up today to share the team’s thoughts. He knows Portuguese football well, having played for Estoril and Vilafranquense. In fact, Qarabag’s squad boasts nine players with ties to Portugal.

Kady admitted Benfica has “great players,” even some world champions. But he stressed that Qarabag has done their homework. “We’ve studied them; we’re ready,” he said with quiet confidence, “and we hope to play a good game.” This match marks a huge milestone for Kady. It’s his very first time playing in Europe’s top club competition.

He spoke of the team’s long journey. “We tried for so many years to get here,” Kady recalled. “We hit the post three times in the playoffs.” Now, after those close calls, they’re finally in. “It’s a huge joy for us, a big responsibility,” he explained. “But mostly, it’s a moment to truly enjoy. We want to play well and show everyone what we can do.”

While Kady often says his next game is always the most important, this one holds special weight. “Because of how big this competition is, it’s one of the biggest games of my entire career,” he reflected. He’s back for his second stint with the four-time Azerbaijani champions, ready for this grand stage.

Coach Sees Big Chance

Guiding Qarabag for an incredible 18th season, coach Gurban Gurbanov views this Champions League return as a massive “opportunity.” He believes it’s especially vital for his players. “We think they will show all their skill against Benfica,” the 53-year-old coach stated. “It’s been a long time since we reached this phase. But this is an excellent chance for our players to shine, and I’m sure they will play a good game.”
