Anurag Kashyap is a filmmaker known for creating gripping stories. His upcoming movie, ‘Nishanchi,’ is generating a lot of buzz. But during its promotions, Kashyap made a surprising comment about his iconic film, ‘Gangs of Wasseypur.’ He actually wants audiences to forget it! What could possibly make a director say such a thing about his cult classic?
When the trailer for ‘Nishanchi’ first came out, people quickly started comparing it to ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ online. Kashyap was quick to point out that while both films share a similar vibe, their stories are quite different. He did promise one thing, though: ‘Nishanchi’ will give viewers the same kind of thrilling entertainment they got from ‘Gangs of Wasseypur.’
In a recent interview with ANI, Anurag explained his thinking. He noted that ‘Nishanchi’ is also a story set in North India. However, he stressed that it’s not just a repeat of ‘Gangs of Wasseypur.’ His real goal with this new movie is for it to be so good, so immersive, that people will naturally start to let go of their attachment to his previous hit. He wants ‘Nishanchi’ to stand on its own and become a new favorite.
Meet the New Face: Aishwarya Thackeray
‘Nishanchi’ also marks a big debut for Aishwarya Thackeray, the grandson of Balasaheb Thackeray. Everyone’s curious about how Anurag decided to cast him. Kashyap shared that he first saw Aishwarya’s monologue from the film ‘Shool’ on YouTube. After meeting him, Anurag was surprised to discover Aishwarya’s family background.
Initially, Anurag offered Aishwarya just one role, not the double role he eventually landed. This was a test. Anurag wanted to see if Aishwarya truly had the dedication needed. Many aspiring actors promise hard work but don’t follow through. But Aishwarya proved himself. After watching his commitment for about six months before filming began, Anurag told him he would be playing both characters. In ‘Nishanchi,’ Aishwarya Thackeray brings two brothers, Bablu and Dablu, to life on screen.
When to Catch ‘Nishanchi’
‘Nishanchi’ was written by Anurag Kashyap, Prasoon Mishra, and Ranjan Chandeli. Anurag also took on the director’s chair for this one. Mark your calendars! The film is set to hit cinemas on September 19, 2025.
