A City Transformed
Since early August, more than 1,800 buildings have been destroyed or badly damaged. Most of these were homes, leaving countless families without a roof over their heads. CNN’s review compared images from late July to early September. What was once a vibrant city now looks vastly different.
Methodical Destruction Unfolds
The satellite views, specifically from August 9 to September 5, show something specific. Much of the damage comes from a “block-by-block” demolition effort. This means large excavators and loaders are systematically tearing down structures. It’s different from widespread aerial bombing. Neighborhoods like Zeitoun and Al-Tuffah have been hit hard. These areas were home to thousands of displaced people. In Jabalia alone, over 750 buildings were wiped out.
The Human Cost
Just recently, Israel issued an order for all Palestinians to leave Gaza City. This order covered every neighborhood before a new, large-scale offensive began. Such a move brings fear of even more people being forced from their homes. Many families packed up and left, but some chose to stay. They felt that escaping might still lead to the same fate elsewhere.
Between September 5 and 8, the Israeli army bombed five tall buildings, according to a Gaza civil defense spokesperson. These buildings held 209 apartments. Each apartment was home to at least 20 people. This sudden destruction left over 4,000 individuals instantly homeless.
A Shadow of Hunger and Fear
This wave of destruction unfolds amid a terrible crisis of hunger. The United Nations has called it a man-made famine in Gaza. The situation is expected to get worse if the attacks continue. Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, has issued a grave warning. He said that increased attacks in Gaza City would cause massive displacement. It would also lead to many innocent deaths and senseless destruction.
A recent UN report painted a grim picture of the entire Gaza Strip. It estimated that over 78% of all buildings have been destroyed or damaged. This damage comes from attacks stretching back almost two years. The current events only add to this devastating tally.
