The Manchester derby always brings a special kind of energy, and this weekend’s clash is no different. It’s more than just a fierce rivalry on the field; for Red Devils coach Ruben Amorim, it’s also a meeting with a familiar face. Amorim, the Portuguese tactician guiding Manchester United, will find himself facing off against Hugo Viana, the sporting director for the Blues. Despite their close friendship, Amorim made it clear that football discussions are off-limits between them.
“We have different jobs now, and we’re at competing clubs,” Amorim explained, drawing a clear line. “We don’t talk about football. I’m all about red, and he bleeds blue. But our close friendship remains strong; that won’t change at all.” He knows his team is in for a tough fight. Manchester City is a top-tier squad, led by what Amorim believes is the best coach in the league. Their playing style is notoriously hard to predict, adding another layer to the challenge.
Despite the formidable opposition, Amorim radiated confidence in his squad. “We are absolutely ready for this match,” he stated firmly. “We have immense faith in our group of players. It promises to be a great game, and we’ve got a clear plan for what we need to do.” He mentioned that recent extra training sessions have been beneficial. For him, the current league standings aren’t the most important thing right now.
Amorim is convinced this Manchester United team is a far better unit than the one that secured a victory at the Etihad last season. “Our team has improved significantly,” he declared, leaving no room for doubt. “The statistics clearly show this progress.” The players are prepared to step onto the pitch and compete fiercely. “But simply saying it isn’t enough,” he added. “We have to go out there on Sunday and prove it.”
However, the Red Devils will face the derby with some key players sidelined. Matheus Cunha, Mason Mount, and Diogo Dalot are all out due to injuries and won’t be available for the game. This means Altay Bayindir will step into the spotlight as the starting goalkeeper for United. This change comes after Andre Onana was loaned out to Trabzonspor, a Turkish club, earlier. Amorim reflected on Onana’s situation and the decision.
“Andre Onana had a fantastic season at Inter Milan,” Amorim acknowledged, praising his former player. “His quality is undeniable; it’s there for everyone to see.” Yet, he pointed to the unique demands of playing for Manchester United. “The pressure at this club is incredibly high, affecting even the smallest details,” he explained. “Sometimes, to navigate that environment, a change becomes necessary.”
Amorim also spoke positively about Senne Lammens, the young Belgian goalkeeper United brought in from Antwerp at the close of the transfer window. “We are very happy with him,” Amorim said with a hopeful tone. “He possesses tremendous potential.” The coach believes that while a goalkeeper needs to be strong and experienced in their current phase, it’s also vital to balance the present with a clear focus on the future. “He will be ready when his moment arrives,” Amorim assured everyone.
As for the league table, Manchester United currently sits in 9th place in the Premier League, with one win, one draw, and one loss to their name. They have also been eliminated from the FA Cup. Their rivals, Manchester City, are positioned 13th, having recorded one win and two losses. This highly anticipated Manchester derby is scheduled for Sunday at 4:30 PM.
