NASA Perseverance discovers ancient Martian riverbed rocks, returning samples for life search

The space rover Perseverance has sent back some truly exciting news from Mars. On September 10, 2025, NASA announced it found intriguing rock layers in what used to be a river channel. This ancient waterway, known as Neretva Vallis, once flowed into the Jezero Crater. Such a spot is perfect for looking for signs of past life.

Scientists at NASA believe these layers, made of dark red mud and clay, might hold clues. They could be linked to old organic matter. This matter might point to tiny living things. Microbes could have existed there billions of years ago. Joel Hurowitz, a research leader at Stony Brook University, called this the most interesting find yet. He asked if organic material helped form the rocks in this ancient Martian river.

Perseverance has been busy collecting treasures. It has gathered 30 samples of rock and soil. This includes pieces found since last summer. The rover needs just six more to meet its goal of 36 total samples. These precious items are sealed in special tubes. But the rover can’t actually prove if life once lived inside them. That critical work has to happen in labs back on Earth.

Bringing these samples home is a complex task. NASA is planning the return trip. However, they are also searching for a quicker and more affordable method. Nikki Fox, who oversees NASA’s science programs, explained these are “leftover signs.” She said they are not living creatures themselves. Still, this discovery marks a significant step. It moves us closer to solving the mystery of whether life truly existed on Mars. The entire planet is paying attention.
