The skies over Poland saw a dramatic turn of events recently. For the first time since conflict ignited in Ukraine, Polish forces used their air defense systems. They intercepted an unmanned drone that had crossed into their territory. This happened during a wave of Russian air strikes targeting western Ukraine.
Polish military leaders shared details of the incident. They said “drone-like objects” had flown into Polish airspace several times. They confirmed using live weapons to stop the intruder. Teams are now searching for the debris from what they shot down. People in the Podlaskie, Mazowieckie, and Lublin areas got a warning. They were told to stay indoors for safety.
Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, Poland’s Defense Minister, spoke out. He confirmed Polish fighter jets took action. They engaged “unfriendly objects.” He also made it clear that Poland’s military is working very closely with NATO command.
The situation even affected air travel. The US Federal Aviation Administration, known as the FAA, reported temporary closures. Four Polish airports, including Warsaw’s Chopin Airport, were impacted. Rzeszów-Jasionka Airport in the southeast was also on the list. This airport is a key hub for people and weapons heading into Ukraine. However, Polish authorities have not officially confirmed these closures.
Ukraine’s Air Force added their own reports. They noted air raid alerts across all Ukrainian regions that night. This included Volyn and Lviv, areas right on the Polish border. Earlier, Ukraine had mentioned a Russian drone crossing into Polish air space. That drone was said to threaten the city of Zamość. But they later removed that message from their Telegram channel.
Across the Atlantic, US lawmakers weighed in with serious concerns. Senator Dick Durbin, a Democrat, sees a pattern. He believes Russia’s repeated flights into NATO airspace are a test. “Vladimir Putin is checking how strong we are,” Durbin stated. He thinks Putin wants to see if NATO will truly defend Poland and other Baltic nations.
Republican Representative Joe Wilson went even further. He called the incident “an attack on a NATO ally.” Wilson said it amounted to “a declaration of war.” He urged President Donald Trump to act. Wilson wants sanctions that would “shatter Russia’s war machine.” He finished by saying, “Putin isn’t happy just losing in Ukraine and killing innocents. He is directly testing NATO’s might on allied ground.”
