The ocean’s sudden power turned tragic this past Saturday when a shark attacked and killed a surfer. Now, authorities are using drones and helicopters to search the coast. For safety, two well-known beaches in Sydney remain closed.
Surf Life Saving New South Wales quickly sent up drones and helicopters. They are patrolling the waters, keeping a close eye on everything. Meanwhile, the NSW Department of Primary Industries has set up more SMART drumlines. These special fishing lines have a satellite link. They alert officials immediately if a shark bites.
Government marine biologists carefully studied the broken surfboard belonging to the person who died. It was snapped into two pieces. Their findings point to a Great White shark, about 3.4 to 3.6 meters long, as the attacker.
Police reported that the incident happened very close to shore, just about 100 meters out. The victim was an experienced surfer. Friends rushed to pull him from the water after the attack. But his injuries were too severe, and he had lost a lot of blood. He died right there on the scene.
This event is a stark reminder of nature’s unpredictable side. It marks Sydney’s first fatal shark attack since February 2022. Before that, you would have to look back to 1963 for a similar tragedy in the area.
According to data from Taronga Zoo, this is the fourth fatal shark attack in Australia for 2025. Another surfer lost their life in Western Australia just this past March.
