Good news, Pixel fans! That big update Google has been preparing for ages is finally here. On September 5, 2025, the Android 16 QPR1 update started rolling out to Pixel devices. This refresh brings a major visual overhaul, including the new Material 3 Expressive look, a redesigned lock screen, and more options for Quick Settings. It also includes the latest Feature Drop and the September 2025 security patch, making your phone both prettier and safer.
Google has been working on these changes for months, letting beta testers try them out first. Now, everyone with a compatible Pixel phone can enjoy the new features. You will notice the visual changes the moment you turn on your device, from the lock screen to the home screen.
The lock screen is where you will see the most changes. The clock now shares space with the date and weather forecast. Google completely redesigned the status icons. Your Wi-Fi and mobile network icons now have a clearer, segmented look. A nice touch is that notifications finally show the real logo of each app, instead of generic icons that tell you nothing.
The Quick Settings panel got a big boost. You can now have up to 16 shortcuts on the screen, double the previous 8. A new 4×4 layout makes better use of the space. You can organize these shortcuts into categories like Connectivity, Utilities, or Screen. This makes finding what you need much faster. This update also fixes some fingerprint sensor problems that appeared in earlier versions.
Even the media player looks fresh. It features new buttons: a rectangular pause button and a pill-shaped play button. The volume bar now displays cool waves when audio is playing. The “Recents” menu is smarter, too. It shows the app logo and name above each window, making it easier to switch between applications.
Personalization options have truly expanded. Wallpapers offer more shapes and colors, local weather effects, and even 3D motion in cinematic images. You can also customize your lock screen clock with different styles and thicknesses. Notifications on the lock screen can be viewed in a compact mode or as a full list.

The Pixel Launcher also sees some neat changes. The “Overview” function is now more compact, making room for an extra row of icons on your home screen. The search bar at the bottom has a new look with shortcuts for AI Mode, if you have it enabled. And the app list no longer takes up the whole screen; it is now a scrolling page, which feels much smoother.
This update is rolling out to all compatible Pixel devices. This includes the Pixel 6 through the brand new Pixel 10 Pro XL, as well as Pixel tablets and the Fold. To download it, just go to Settings, then System, and finally System Update. You will not even need to restart your phone. If you are in the Beta program, you will get a small update before moving to the final version.
Beyond the exciting visual changes, Android 16 brings other important improvements. These include “Real-time updates” and better battery and notification management. A new desktop mode also offers a unique way to use your phone, making it act more like a personal computer. This update truly enhances the Pixel experience.
