Abdeslam Ouaddou, coach of Orlando Pirates FC

Sometimes, life throws a curveball when you least expect it. Imagine this scenario: you’re riding high after a big victory, heading home, when you see others in distress. You stop to help, acting on pure instinct and human kindness. But that very act of generosity leads you into harm’s way. This is the unexpected and serious situation facing Abdeslam Ouaddou, the head coach for South Africa’s Orlando Pirates FC, a man known to many football fans from his playing days, including a stint at Fulham in England.

Ouaddou, who is 46 years old, found himself in the hospital on Sunday. This wasn’t because of a tough tackle or a training accident. It happened after a road incident that began with a selfless act of heroism. His team had just beaten Chippa United 3-0 in a league match, a solid win on the road. The Pirates’ bus was making its way back from Gqeberha, traveling along the R21 highway.

As they drove, Ouaddou and his coaching team spotted a serious two-vehicle crash. Without a moment’s hesitation, they pulled over. The coach and several members of his staff got off the bus to offer help to the victims of the initial accident. They were focused on providing assistance. Then, tragedy struck again. A fourth vehicle, specifically a Nissan NP200, crashed into the cars that were already stopped on the road. This unexpected collision hit the group, causing severe injuries to Ouaddou and five other members of his coaching staff.

The Johannesburg-based Orlando Pirates Football Club quickly released a statement to shed light on the grim events. They confirmed the incident, detailing how their head coach and five staff members were involved. The club’s statement explained the sequence: finding an existing crash, stopping to help, and then being struck by a third, oncoming vehicle. All six injured individuals were rushed to the hospital immediately. They are currently receiving medical attention.

The club made it clear that their main concern is the health and well-being of their colleagues. They are keeping in close contact with the medical teams providing care. The Pirates also pledged to provide all necessary support to the affected staff and their families during this difficult time. They asked for privacy and respect for everyone involved as they focus on their recovery. The club promised to share more updates as soon as it is appropriate to do so.

Abdeslam Ouaddou has had a long and storied career in football. He began his journey at Nancy in France, where he had three different spells. He played for Nancy from 1999 to 2001, again from 2008 to 2010, and eventually retired there in 2013. In between his time at Nancy, he played for several other clubs across Europe and the Middle East. These included Fulham in England, Rennes and Valenciennes in France, Olympiacos in Greece, and both Al-Duhail and Qatar SC in Qatar. He also proudly represented his home country, earning 92 caps for the Moroccan national team and scoring three goals.
