47-Year-Old Inmate Dies in Women’s Prison From Cardiac Arrest After Drug Use

A 47-year-old woman, held at the Unit 5 Women’s Prison in Colón, passed away early Sunday. Her death occurred around 1 AM within the facility’s health service.

Reports from the National Institute of Rehabilitation (INR) detail the unfolding events. Police learned the inmate had collapsed. She was swiftly taken to the facility’s health center. Other prisoners had told staff the woman had consumed psychotropic drugs. Given this information, doctors performed a stomach pump.

However, during this medical intervention, the woman suffered a cardiac arrest. She died right there.

This sudden death has triggered a formal investigation. The case now sits with the Flagrancy Prosecutor’s Office, 7th shift. Prosecutor Natalia Altez is in charge. She has asked for the Scientific Police to visit Unit 5 of the INR. They will conduct forensics. Their work will help determine the exact facts leading to the woman’s death inside the prison.
