A special prosecutor in South Korea has officially charged Kim Keon-hee, the nation’s former First Lady, with various offenses. These include corruption and taking bribes. This big move happened just as her initial arrest warrant was about to run out. It marks a historic moment for the country. No wife of a former president has ever faced such serious charges and detention before.
Ms. Kim is the wife of former President Yoon Suk-yeol. Interestingly, he himself is currently in prison. Mr. Yoon faces trial for rebellion, accused of trying to declare martial law last December. Now, his wife’s legal troubles add another layer to their family’s dramatic fall from political power.
The special prosecutor’s team, led by Min Joong-ki, released a statement about the charges. They accused Ms. Kim of breaking several important laws. These include rules about capital markets, how political parties get their money, and laws against accepting bribes when acting as a middleman.
The allegations against Ms. Kim cover several different areas.
- **Stock Manipulation:** Prosecutors claim she helped fund efforts to artificially inflate stock prices. This happened between 2009 and 2012.
- **Political Favors:** She and her husband reportedly got free opinion polls before the 2022 presidential election. This was from influential brokers. In exchange, they allegedly pushed for Kim Yang-sun, a former People Power Party member, to become a candidate in a by-election.
- **Luxury Gifts:** Ms. Kim is also suspected of getting expensive gifts. These came from the “Unification Church” through a shaman in 2022. Prosecutors believe these gifts were given in return for business help.
Ms. Kim was first arrested on August 12. Since then, the special prosecutor’s team questioned her five times. She mostly chose not to answer their questions, using her right to stay silent. This indictment means she will stay in custody for at least another six months. This period could get longer if new evidence appears and more warrants are requested.
The investigation started about two months ago. Since then, it has grown wider. Recently, authorities searched the homes and offices of several people. These individuals are suspected of giving jewelry to Ms. Kim. They may have hoped to get government jobs or business advantages in return.
This double legal trouble for the Yoon family is truly unprecedented. It highlights a difficult period for the country’s past leaders and their families.
