Portuguese cyclist Maria Martins recently powered through the field to claim a gold medal in the elimination race. This impressive win happened at the Olomouckého Kraje Grand Prix in Prostejov, Czech Republic. The event was a strong showing for Portugal, with the nation collecting two other medals alongside Martins’ gold.
Martins proved too strong for her rivals, beating Norway’s Nora Tveit to take the top spot. Her compatriot, Daniela Campos, also shone brightly, securing the bronze medal in the same event. It was a fantastic start for the Portuguese duo.
Later, Martins found herself back on the podium in the scratch race, earning a silver medal. Poland’s Maja Tracka grabbed the gold in this discipline, with fellow Pole Olivija Baleisyte finishing third. Daniela Campos rounded out the top eight in the scratch race.
Both Portuguese cyclists are set for more action in the coming days. They will compete in additional races, focusing on the omnium event. These upcoming challenges are part of the Grand Prix Prostejov – Otmar Malecka Memorial.
Their efforts at the Prostejov Velodrome carry significant weight. Maria Martins and Daniela Campos aim to collect crucial points for the International Cycling Union (UCI) ranking. These points are vital for their goal of qualifying for the Track Cycling World Championships.
