Uruguay Customs Seizes $9.3 Million Counterfeit Adidas, Valentino Goods at Montevideo Port

A large shipment of fake goods was recently stopped at a busy port. Officials from the National Customs Directorate (DNA) in Montevideo announced the discovery this week. They found thousands of counterfeit items hidden in a shipping container.

This wasn’t a random find; it was part of their regular work. Customs officers were conducting a routine check on August 18. The container was declared to hold 164 bundles. But when they inspected it more closely, something was off. They instead found 135 boxes filled with illegal merchandise.

These boxes contained clothing, shoes, accessories, and even packaging materials. All the goods were designed to look like famous brands. They mimicked popular names such as “Adidas” and “Valentino.” The sheer volume of items was quite impressive.

Interestingly, the fake products were not already in their branded boxes. The packaging materials were kept separate. They were packed in different boxes, ready to be put together later. This suggests the smugglers hoped to assemble the fake items at their final destination.

In total, the customs team counted 17,061 pieces of clothing and footwear. The estimated value of these counterfeit goods is very high. Officials believe they are worth more than $9 million. The precise value is estimated at $9,383,550.

The National Customs Directorate quickly informed the Prosecutor’s Office about the seizure. The Prosecutor’s Office then took steps to act. They told customs to notify the legal teams for both Adidas and Valentino. The fake goods will now remain blocked. This will happen until the law firms officially file their complaints.
