Gemini Secures Malta MiCA License, Expands Crypto Services Across Europe

Gemini, the cryptocurrency exchange founded by the Winklevoss twins, just secured a key approval in Europe. They landed a license under the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation, known as MiCA. This big step helps them grow their presence across the continent.

The Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA) granted the license. Gemini shared this news in a blog post, explaining how it will boost their European reach. Now, they can offer their crypto trading services in more than 30 countries and regions in Europe. This license adds to their existing MiFID II authorization, which they received in May for offering derivatives in the European market.

Mark Jennings, Gemini’s Director for Europe, highlighted the importance of this development. He stated it is a “critical milestone” for their regulated expansion. The approval will let them provide their “secure and reliable crypto products” to customers in many European spots.

MiCA Clears the Way for Crypto in Europe

The MiCA rules became active in December 2024. These rules aim to make digital asset regulations consistent across the EU. This should bring more legal clarity and help more people use cryptocurrencies. Gemini stands firmly behind clear regulation. They believe clear industry rules are essential for crypto to be adopted globally. They also think Europe is showing itself to be a very innovative and forward-thinking region in this area.

This European success comes as Gemini is also eyeing other major moves. The company is working towards a public listing in the United States. They have hired major banks like Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, and Morgan Stanley to guide them. Their goal is to get their shares listed on Nasdaq.

Additionally, Gemini introduced a tokenized stock offering in Europe in late June. This service uses the Arbitrum network. It lets people trade shares, like those of Strategy, around the clock. Other players in the industry, such as Kraken and Robinhood, are also exploring similar tokenization products or seeking regulatory expansions and public listings.

With this new license, Gemini joins a small group of authorized crypto-asset service providers in Malta. This list includes companies like Bitpanda, Crypto.com, and OKX. The MFSA has given out five MiCA licenses so far. However, the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) is looking closely at some parts of the MFSA’s approval process. This latest approval solidifies Gemini’s standing in the European crypto world. It also promises more stability for both everyday investors and large financial institutions.
