Portuguese Sports Media Mogul Joaquim Oliveira Dies at 78 from Pneumonia

The sports world in Portugal lost a true visionary this Saturday. Joaquim Oliveira, a name tied to the very fabric of how many here watch and enjoy games, passed away at 78 years old. His family shared the sad news in a statement. They said a severe case of pneumonia was the cause.

Born in Penafiel back in 1947, Joaquim Oliveira built a career that was all about big ideas and a deep love for sports. He especially focused on growing football in Portugal. He wasn’t just a businessman; he was a pioneer. He saw what sports could become.

Back in 1984, he started Olivedesportos. This company was a first of its kind. It handled TV rights, advertising, and marketing for sports. He completely changed how sports news and events were shared across the country. Ten years later, he bought the well-known sports newspaper, O Jogo. Then, in 1998, he launched Sport TV. This was the very first channel in Portugal fully dedicated to sports. It became a huge source of pride for him. Sport TV truly changed how people saw football and other sports in Portugal.

Many credit Joaquim Oliveira with making Portuguese football stronger. He helped clubs, leagues, and organizations become more stable and lasting. His work earned him many honors. The Portuguese Professional Football League gave him a Prestige Award in 2019. He also received various awards from Portugal’s top football clubs.

Beyond sports, he played a key role in the media world too. He helped save important national newspapers like Diário de Notícias and Jornal de Notícias. His contributions even stretched back to his hometown. In 2014, Penafiel made him an Honorary Citizen.

But for all his public success, Joaquim Oliveira was, at his core, a man of family and friends. He was a very proud grandfather to his ten grandchildren. They were his biggest joy and what kept him going in recent years. He always found time for things that made him happy. He had a special love for golf, playing the sport actively for decades, right up until a few weeks ago.

His wife, children, and grandchildren signed the family’s statement. They shared their deep thanks to all the friends and partners who were with him throughout his life. That support and friendship, they said, meant everything to him. They also asked for privacy and understanding during this time of grieving.

The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) also announced his passing. They called him an important and influential figure in Portuguese football. They noted his pioneering work in TV rights, advertising, and sports marketing. He was also the chairman of Olivedesportos and Sport TV until his death. Joaquim Oliveira was the brother of António Oliveira, a former Portuguese international player and national team coach.
