This strategic change was made public on August 11, 2025. President Prabowo Subianto unveiled the establishment of these new Regional Military Commands, known as Komando Daerah Militer, or Kodam. These new commands will cover important islands and provinces. They include Riau Islands-Riau, West Sumatra-Jambi, and Lampung-Bengkulu. Also added are Central-South Kalimantan, Central-West Sulawesi, and Merauke City in South Papua province. With these additions, the nation’s army network will grow to 21 commands nationwide.
The President made this announcement at a military ceremony. It took place in Batujajar City, West Java Province. He stated that the changes would boost the nation’s power. It will also help protect national sovereignty. This step is a direct response to global instability. Conflicts in Europe and the Middle East are causing ripples across the globe. The President emphasized the need for a strong defense in these troubled times.
As part of this overhaul, a significant position is returning. The role of Deputy Commander of the National Armed Forces is being reinstated. This important job has been empty for more than 20 years. General Fachrul Razi last held it between 1999 and 2000. Now, Tandyo Budi Revita has been appointed to this revived post. His duties will include coordinating the Army, Navy, and Air Force. He will also step in for the overall commander when needed.
Wahyu Yudhayana, a spokesperson for the Army, spoke about these changes. He explained that the expanded structure aims to improve the “total people’s security defense” system. This approach means involving everyone in national security. The military also wants to support development that improves people’s lives. It’s about protecting the nation and ensuring the well-being of its citizens.
