Guru Dutt Centenary: Classic Films to Screen in 250+ Indian Theaters

Get ready, film buffs! The work of a true cinematic legend, Guru Dutt, is making a grand return to the big screen. This August marks a special occasion: his centenary celebration. To honor his timeless artistry, a selection of his most famous movies will be shown in theaters across the country. Bringing Classics Back to Theaters

From August 8 to 10, more than 250 cinemas will screen Guru Dutt’s best films. Imagine watching “Pyaasa,” “Aar-Paar,” “Chaudhvin Ka Chand,” “Saheb Biwi Aur Ghulam,” “Kaagaz Ke Phool,” “Mr. & Mrs. 55,” and “Baaz” on a massive screen. This nationwide showing is a huge treat for both long-time fans and new audiences.

A Special Gathering for a Legend

To kick off this celebration of Guru Dutt’s genius, a special event was held. It was put together by Ultra Media in partnership with NFDC-NFAI. Many important people attended. His granddaughters, Karuna Dutt and Gauri Dutt, were there. Filmmakers R Balki and Sudhir Mishra also joined. Sushil Kumar Agarwal, CEO of Ultra Media, and Prakash Magdum, Managing Director of National Film Development Corporation (NFDC), were present. Even actress Divya Dutta came to show her respect.

Everyone shared how much Guru Dutt meant to them. Karuna Dutt, his granddaughter, expressed her joy. She said, “We are very happy that his work and films are remembered even after so many years.” Gauri Dutt, also his granddaughter, added a touching thought. She shared, “I think this is a very emotional moment for the family because even today, when we meet, everyone remembers him with great affection.”

Filmmakers also spoke from the heart. R. Balki mentioned his own work. He said, “I have actually tried to make a film to pay tribute to him. He was the most sensitive filmmaker ever.” Sudhir Mishra, another respected filmmaker, felt a deep connection. He shared, “This means a lot to me. We came into cinema because he taught us this.”

Sushil Kumar Agarwal, CEO of Ultra Media, talked about the importance of the event. He said, “People should watch Guru Dutt ji’s films. They don’t find a place to watch them, especially on the big screen. That is why this festival is being held.” Prakash Magdum, NFDC’s Managing Director, echoed this sentiment. He stated, “Guru Dutt ji is a great artist of Indian cinema. We are celebrating his 100th birthday.” It’s clear that this event isn’t just a simple re-run.
