Martim Mayer, a leading candidate for the Benfica presidency, just made a significant move. He announced his pick to head the club’s Fiscal Council: Carlos Moura. This choice signals Mayer’s focus on strong financial watchdogs for the club. The big election day is set for October 25.
Carlos Moura is no stranger to leadership. He currently serves as the president of AHRESP, a major group for Portugal’s hotel and restaurant businesses. He also advises the Trivalor Group. For him, joining Benfica’s leadership feels like a homecoming.
“Benfica is part of who I am,” Moura shared in a statement from Martim Mayer’s campaign. “I’ve been a member for many years. I’ve seen great wins and tough times, always feeling like I belong. Taking on this role means I bring years of experience in watching over operations and leading groups.”
Moura emphasized his core beliefs: independence, taking responsibility, and strictness. “Fans demand honesty and trust these days,” he added. “I truly believe Benfica needs a Fiscal Council that is strong, active, and respected. That’s the job I plan to do – with passion, skill, and a full sense of purpose.”
Born in Lisbon in 1954, Moura has a diverse background. He studied management, which gave him a solid business understanding. He also pursued electrical engineering, broadening his view on how businesses and technology work together. He is a seasoned manager, business owner, and community leader.
Martim Mayer, who is the grandson of the famous Borges Coutinho, praised the choice. “It’s a huge honor to have someone with Carlos Moura’s background and knowledge,” Mayer stated. “He has an incredible track record, holding important roles in our country’s top business organizations.”
