Divya Dutta: Amrita Pritam Biopic My Dream Role; Reflects on 31-Year Career

If you’ve watched a Hindi film or web series in the last three decades, chances are you’ve seen Divya Dutta. This talented actress dives deep into every role she takes on. Her performances in movies like ‘Delhi-6’, ‘Veer Zaara’, and ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’ have earned her much praise.

Divya Dutta has been a part of Hindi cinema for 31 years. She has also acted in Punjabi, Urdu, Tamil, Malayalam, and English films. Now, she’s adding Telugu cinema to her list with her debut film, ‘Maya Sabha’. She recently spoke about her new role, her experiences in the industry, and her journey as an actress.

Stepping into Telugu Cinema

Divya picked ‘Maya Sabha’ for her Telugu debut because she felt it was a strong project. It’s a political drama, a made-up story set in an older time. Each character is important, and her role is especially key. It’s the kind of character who can change everything without making a lot of noise.

When asked about the differences between the South and Hindi film industries, Divya said there isn’t a huge gap. She believes the story always matters most. However, she noted that in the South, time is highly valued, and a lot of good work goes into the script. She feels the Hindi industry is now heading in that same direction.

Choosing Roles Wisely

Divya shared that early in her career, she did some multi-starrer films where her screen time was limited. But she explained that those were her choices. She never took on work out of obligation. She always picked projects that she truly wanted to do. This is why her list of films looks a little different, but it’s completely her own.

The turning point came after her film ‘Aaja Nachle’. She had signed many films at once. Then, she spoke with Aditya Chopra, who told her, “You are a very good actor, don’t become a machine.” Those words really hit home. She started asking herself if she was just filling her calendar or truly living the stories. After that, she turned down many films. That’s when projects like ‘Delhi-6’ came along, which felt very personal to her. The honesty, truth, and pain of that character were so real. She didn’t just act; she truly felt it. That character, she says, still lives inside her.

No Pressure for a “Heroine Look”

Divya says she never felt pressured to fit a typical “heroine look” in the industry. Early on, she did do songs and romantic scenes with leading men. But then, she found herself in films like ‘Train to Pakistan’ and worked with directors like Shyam Benegal. She chose a different path, which she enjoyed. She has always been drawn to unique stories.

A Dream Biopic Role

If she had to pick someone for a biopic, Divya would choose Amrita Pritam. Pritam’s writing, emotions, and outspoken nature have always touched her deeply. Divya sees her not just as a poet, but as a whole way of thinking, a revolution. Playing her character, Divya believes, would be a great honor.

Divya Dutta is known as one of Bollywood’s finest and most gifted actresses. She has made a special mark with her powerful acting in movies, web series, and on streaming platforms. She was last seen playing Rajmata Soyrabai Bhosale in the historical film ‘Chhaava’, which is set to release on February 14, 2025.
