Sex and the City Spin-off And Just Like That Canceled After Season 3

Get ready to say goodbye to Carrie Bradshaw again, because And Just Like That is wrapping up. The popular spin-off from the Sex and the City universe will not return for more episodes after its third season finale.

Showrunner Michael Patrick King shared the news on Friday, August 1. He confirmed that the series, which aired on Max, will not be back for more episodes after its two-part third season finale.

King released a statement, explaining the decision. He said, "And just like that… the continuous storytelling of the Sex and the City universe comes to an end." He added that while writing the final episode of season three, he felt it was "an excellent place to end." King mentioned that he, along with Sarah Jessica Parker, Casey Bloys, and Sarah Aubrey, decided to conclude the beloved show this year. They also chose to make the final run a two-part finale and increased the original episode order from 10 to 12.

King, who is 70, also shared why this news wasn’t announced earlier. He wanted to wait until after the show returned for its third season in May. "SJP and I," he continued, referring to Sarah Jessica Parker, "postponed the announcement until now because we didn’t want the word ‘final’ to overshadow the fun of watching the season." He also expressed deep gratitude to fans. "We deeply thank all viewers who have let these characters into their homes and in their hearts during all these years." The Season 3 finale will air on August 14. This episode will now serve as the show’s grand finale.

The story began with Sex and the City, which originally aired on HBO from 1998 to 2004. That series followed Carrie Bradshaw, played by Parker, as she navigated love in New York City. She was always with her close friends: Charlotte, played by Kristin Davis; Miranda Hobbes, played by Cynthia Nixon; and Samantha, played by Kim Cattrall. Sex and the City even inspired two movies before Max brought the characters back in December 2021 for And Just Like That.

And Just Like That certainly kept viewers talking. It brought back beloved characters, even featuring a short but memorable cameo from Kim Cattrall. The show also delivered plenty of surprises. Fans reacted to shocking moments like the death of Big, the introduction of Che, and the ongoing storyline with Aidan.

King has often spoken about the show’s bold creative choices. He defended their decision to take big risks. He told Variety in February 2022, "We did something that was difficult to do, which is to take something known and make it new. For better or for worse."

King also shared his thoughts on the feedback he saw on social media. He explained that he looks at the "macro" picture, not the "micro" details. He summarized fan comments, saying, "This is the best thing I’ve seen! This is the worst thing I’ve seen! They should kill them all! I can’t live without them. The clothes are horrible, the clothes are great." He then added plainly, "I’m not interested in the details."

And Just Like That aired new episodes on Max on Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET.
