Louis Rees-Zammit, the former Welsh rugby star, has officially hung up his American football helmet. He announced his return to rugby in Wales this Thursday. His brief NFL adventure, which kicked off in January 2024, did not pan out as planned.
The 24-year-old athlete did not share which club he will join. Still, he made it clear he is ready to dive back into the sport where he truly shined. Rugby fans remember him as one of the most promising and fastest wingers in the world. He told his followers on social media, “It was a great experience, but it’s time to come home.”
Rees-Zammit initially signed with the Kansas City Chiefs early last year. He was then sent to the Jacksonville Jaguars. He never played in an official game for either team. His time in American football was limited to training sessions.
Back in rugby, Rees-Zammit boasts an impressive record. He played for Wales 32 times. He was a key player for his national team when they won the Six Nations tournament in 2021. In that same year, he joined the British and Irish Lions on their tour to South Africa.
During the 2023 Rugby World Cup, he scored five tries for Wales. One of those memorable tries came against Portugal in their opening match of the tournament in France. Wales dominated that game, winning 28-7.

Rees-Zammit believes now is the perfect time for this change. He stated, “This is the right time to make this decision. I want to return to rugby and do what I do best. The rest will be announced soon.” He is focused on getting back into rugby shape. His big goal is to be available for Wales’s international matches this November.
