Belgian Midfielder Welat Cagro Joins Portimonense For Two Years

Cagro comes from Belgian Beerschot

Portimonense is about to welcome a new face to its ranks. Welat Cagro, a 26-year-old Belgian midfielder, is set to sign a two-year deal. The former Beerschot player has already arrived in Portimão. He is expected to complete his medical tests this Monday before making the agreement official.

Cagro brings a unique journey to the team. He hails from the Kurdistan region in Asia and might be the first player of his background to play professional football in Portugal. This defensive midfielder has built up experience across Europe. He has played in the Dutch second division for both Telstar and NAC Breda. His career also took him through Belgium with Beerschot and even to Armenia’s top tier, representing Banants Yerevan.

While one player is on his way, another high-profile name will not be joining. Despite buzzing reports from Mexico linking Guillermo Ochoa to Portimonense, the veteran goalkeeper is unlikely to move to the Algarve. Ochoa, who played for AVS SAD last season, was a strong target for many.

Portimonense already has two goalkeepers, Hamza Alaa and Cibois. They cannot promise Ochoa the one thing he truly wants: regular playing time. This consistent game time is crucial for him to be considered for the 2026 World Cup squad. So, the club has opted for different plans in goal. Record gathered this information.
