The courtroom felt heavy with emotion on Wednesday, July 23, as Alivea Goncalves, sister of Idaho murder victim Kaylee Goncalves, came face-to-face with Bryan Kohberger. She was there to deliver a victim impact statement, a powerful moment where she spoke directly to the man who took her sister’s life. It was a display of raw courage.
Alivea, 30 years old, didn’t hold back. She looked right at Kohberger in the Ada County Courthouse in Boise, Idaho. "Sit up straight when I’m talking to you," she told him, her voice clear and strong. She also made it clear that her sister, Kaylee, was a fighter. Alivea told Kohberger that if he hadn’t attacked Kaylee and her best friend, Madison Mogen, while they were sleeping, Kaylee would have "kicked his butt."
This intense confrontation happened as Kohberger was sentenced to four life sentences. He was found guilty of murdering Kaylee, Madison Mogen, their roommate Xana Kernodle, and Xana’s boyfriend Ethan Chapin. The brutal attacks took place in the early morning hours of November 13, 2022, at an off-campus student house in Moscow, Idaho.
Later, in an interview with NewsNation correspondent and true crime YouTuber Brian Entin, released on Friday, July 25, Alivea shared more about her experience. She described meeting Kohberger’s gaze and simply stated, "He’s not human."
Alivea explained that her words in court weren’t just for Kaylee and Maddie, they were about them. She felt that if the girls were there, her message would truly resonate with their spirits. Her father, Steve Goncalves, also delivered a powerful statement. Before Alivea spoke, Steve even moved the podium so he could look Kohberger directly in the eyes.
"I wanted to keep eye contact as much as possible," Alivea said about facing her sister’s killer. "When I tell you, there’s no human there." She clarified that she wasn’t scared of him, nor did he intimidate her. But she felt a deep, primal alarm inside her. "My body was telling me: ‘Run! Get out! This is a threat. This isn’t a human.’" Alivea struggled to describe it, saying the closest comparison was meeting an alien. She truly felt there was no human being, no humanity behind his eyes.
Alivea recalled feeling pure "anger" and "rage" coming from Kohberger’s stare as she spoke. It was relentless. "The only thing I remember feeling is, ‘This guy is furious. This is an anger I’ve never experienced firsthand,’" she shared.
She stood her ground. "I was ready to stand firm. There was nothing that would make me back down from that moment," Alivea said, adding that she felt rage almost from the very beginning.
Alivea explained the true goal of her victim impact statement. It was about "taking back that power and giving it back to Kaylee and Maddie, to Xana and Ethan too." She wanted to give them the heroic moment she truly believes they deserved.
Her mission was to regain control from Kohberger. She wanted to make him as uncomfortable as possible, using her understanding of who he is. "Everything was genuine. Everything was incredibly true," she stated. "Everything I said was true to who he is and who they were."
Reflecting on her final comment in court, she simply told Entin: "I truly believe Kaylee would have kicked his butt."
