Foldable phones are getting slimmer, making them much easier to carry. The chatter began when tech insider Ice Universe recently showed off Samsung’s newest foldable, the Galaxy Z Fold7. Ice Universe claimed it was one of the thinnest foldables around. Samsung later confirmed its folded thickness at 8.90 millimeters.
Meanwhile, Honor, a brand making waves, stepped into the ring. They officially confirmed the thickness of their own new foldable, the Magic V5. This phone, which just launched in early July 2025, measures 8.80 millimeters when folded.

When fully opened, the Honor Magic V5 is incredibly thin at 4.10 millimeters. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold7 isn’t far behind, measuring 4.2 millimeters when unfolded. These numbers show how close these two companies are in making super-slim devices.

Interestingly, Ice Universe shared different measurements after their own tests. They claimed the Honor Magic V5 was 8.95 millimeters thick when folded. For the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7, Ice Universe measured it at 8.79 millimeters folded. They also noted that Honor’s Ivory White version of the Magic V5 might be the thinnest. Other colors, according to Ice Universe, could be slightly thicker at 9.0 millimeters folded and 4.2 millimeters unfolded.

Honor has clarified its official numbers, stating they come from the Honor Lab. These measurements do not count the thickness of screen protectors or the camera bump on the back. They also mentioned that small differences can happen during manufacturing.
Despite the tiny variations in reported numbers, both the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 and Honor Magic V5 are incredibly thin devices. The difference between them is only about 0.1 millimeters. Most people won’t even notice this small difference during everyday use. This race to make thinner foldables is a good sign for consumers. It pushes all phone makers to create even better and more portable devices in the future.
