There’s a growing buzz in Mumbai’s legal circles, and it’s not the usual courtroom drama. A local court is putting the Mumbai police on the spot. They want to know why a complaint against well-known producer Ekta Kapoor hasn’t moved forward. It all stems from a web series accused of showing India’s military in a disrespectful light. This isn’t a new issue; the complaint was first filed way back in 2020.
The Bandra Magistrate Court is pretty serious about the police’s slow pace. The police haven’t submitted their investigation report on time. Because of this delay, the court has sent them a formal notice. The original complaint claims a show on Kapoor’s streaming platform, Alt Balaji, wrongly depicted Indian army uniforms and symbols. This portrayal allegedly hurt the dignity of the armed forces.
The Original Complaint
The person who kicked off this whole thing is YouTuber Vikas Pathak, also known as ‘Hindustani Bhau.’ He filed his complaint at the Khar Police Station in 2020. Pathak stated that a scene in the Alt Balaji web series showed an officer in an Indian army uniform in an inappropriate situation. He felt this scene disrespected the nation’s military. The complaint also named Ekta Kapoor’s parents, Shobha Kapoor and Jeetendra Kapoor, who are also involved in production.
This particular controversial scene first came out in May 2020. People have been upset about it on social media for a long time. Yet, there hasn’t been any public apology or explanation from Alt Balaji or the producers involved. The court sees the police’s delay in this serious matter as simply unacceptable.
Court Steps In
The case got fresh attention in February 2024. That’s when the Bandra court told the Khar police to investigate the complaint. They gave the police a deadline: submit a report by May 9. But May 9 came and went, and no report arrived. So, on July 4, the court decided enough was enough. They sent a notice to the police, demanding to know why the investigation report hadn’t been turned in.
What the Complainant’s Lawyer Says
Ali Kashif Khan Deshmukh, the lawyer for the complainant, spoke about the issue. He explained that the web series episode showed a character in an Indian army uniform doing something unethical. He believes this not only disrespects the army but also shows disregard for the country’s national symbols. The court’s demand for answers shows they want this case to move forward properly.
