Apple Foldable iPhone Prototype Enters Testing

For years, whispers about a foldable iPhone have echoed through the tech world. It wasn’t just a fantasy. Now, it seems Apple isn’t just dreaming anymore. New reports suggest a working prototype of a foldable iPhone is very real. It’s deep in testing right now.

According to sources in the supply chain, as reported by DigitalTimes, this foldable iPhone prototype began its first round of tests in June 2025. This early stage, called P1 (Prototype 1), is where Apple checks if the basic design works. They test both the hardware and the software to see if it’s even possible to build. This initial phase is expected to wrap up by the end of 2025.

After P1, the device moves to Engineering Verification Test, or EVT. This is a crucial step where engineers thoroughly check the design. They look for any flaws or problems early on. The goal is to make sure everything works as planned before thinking about mass production.

If everything goes smoothly, Apple could launch this foldable iPhone sooner than many expect. There’s a chance it might debut alongside the iPhone 18 in September 2026. This would be a huge moment for the smartphone industry.

What’s Inside This Foldable Wonder?

The foldable iPhone is rumored to feature a 7.8-inch main OLED display. This key component will come from Samsung Display. Imagine a screen that folds without a visible crease – that’s what Apple is aiming for.

This new device won’t have Face ID, which might surprise some. Instead, it will bring back Touch ID, placed conveniently on the side of the phone. Another interesting detail is an under-display camera. This means the camera is hidden beneath the screen itself.

Design and Durability

Apple seems focused on making this foldable device incredibly thin. When folded, sources suggest it could be just 9.0 to 9.5 mm thick. If true, this would make it one of the slimmest foldable phones out there.

The body is expected to be made from titanium alloy, known for its strength and light weight. Even the hinge, which is critical for a foldable phone, will get special treatment. It’s rumored to use a liquid metal material to make the folding mechanism extra tough. This shows Apple’s dedication to durability.

iPhone Fold

The price for such a groundbreaking device won’t be cheap. Early estimates suggest it could cost between $2,100 and $2,300. This places it firmly in the premium segment of the foldable market.

Interestingly, it’s not all smooth sailing for Apple’s foldable ambitions. Reports also indicate that Apple has temporarily stopped developing a foldable iPad. This pause is due to manufacturing challenges and a lower-than-expected demand for such a device. It seems Apple is prioritizing the iPhone for its foldable future.
