Dortmund Spoils Xabi Alonso’s Farewell with 4-1 Win Over Bayer Leverkusen

Xabi Alonso’s farewell game at the BayArena didn’t go as planned. His Bayer Leverkusen team lost 4-1 to Borussia Dortmund. The match started on a high note for Leverkusen, with Jeremie Frimpong scoring in the 31st minute, thanks to a pass from Florian Wirtz.

The Dortmund team stormed back, however, equalizing just two minutes later through Julian Brandt. They took the lead before halftime with Julian Ryerson’s goal. Leverkusen dominated possession in the second half but struggled to create scoring chances.

Dortmund, on the other hand, continued to threaten and scored their third goal in the 73rd minute through Karim Adeyemi. Serhou Guirassy added a fourth goal just four minutes later. Leverkusen’s Jonas Hofmann scored a late consolation goal in the 90+2 minute.

Implications for Both Teams

This loss doesn’t affect Leverkusen’s second-place finish, secured last week. For Dortmund, the win keeps their UEFA Champions League hopes alive. They’re currently fifth with 54 points, just one point behind Friburgo.

Xabi Alonso’s Legacy

Alonso’s tenure at Leverkusen has been a successful one. In 139 games, he’s secured 88 wins and three titles. His departure marks the end of an era for the club. The team’s performance in this final game was a mixed bag, but Alonso’s overall impact will be remembered.
