Kimi Antonelli has become the first Mercedes driver to take to the track in the new year, albeit in a 2020 car, the W11, at the Jerez circuit.
According to the regulations, filming day tests must be conducted in a car that is at least two years old. The W11 from 2020 meets this requirement. Additionally, the car features camouflage colors to conceal its true design.
Getting Familiar with the Equipment
Antonelli is using these tests to get accustomed to his new team’s equipment, radios, steering wheel, and work procedures. This is a crucial step in his preparation for the upcoming season.
His teammate, Lewis Hamilton, is expected to follow suit in the next few hours, getting familiar with his new Ferrari equipment.
Extensive Testing Ahead
Ferrari is currently planning to provide Hamilton with an extensive testing period, spanning four days or 1,000 kilometers, utilizing old cars. This will allow him to get as much track time as possible before the season begins.
The team has a simulator for qualifying and racing, but nothing compares to the real-world experience of testing on a track. Hamilton’s testing schedule is set to begin at Ferrari’s test site in Maranello, Fiorano, on January 19 or 20, and will conclude at Montmeló several days later.
