Financial Struggles Force Norwegian Handball Club to Disband
Despite being a three-time European champion, the Norwegian Vipers Kristiansand handball club has been forced to discontinue operations due to financial struggles. The club, which has been on the verge of bankruptcy since last October, made the announcement official through a statement.
Reasons Behind the Decision
The board of directors made the decision to discontinue operations after a thorough assessment of the club’s financial situation and lack of opportunities to continue operating. The main factors contributing to this decision were the lack of an operational guarantee for the current season and a severe lack of liquidity.
At an extraordinary annual general meeting on October 28, 2024, a new board was elected, assuming that an external group of supporters would provide a guarantee of operation for the 2024/2025 season. However, the board’s assessment concluded that this guarantee was not realistic.
Consequences of the Decision
Due to the lack of guarantee and severe liquidity problems, the board of directors was forced to declare bankruptcy and file for bankruptcy court. As a result, the club has withdrawn from the Norwegian League and the EHF Women’s Champions League.
The Vipers, one of the most powerful teams in Europe, had a star-studded roster, including Spanish player Paula Arcos, goalkeepers Katrine Lunde and Silje Solberg-Osthassel, Croatian Ana Debelic, Swedish Jamina Roberts, and Dutch Lois Abbingh. All staff members have received their freedom to join other teams immediately.
The club’s financial struggles had been evident in recent years, with several star players leaving the team, including Norwegians Henny Reistad, Nora Mork, and Linn Sulland, Russian Anna Vyakhireva, and Swedish Isabelle Gulldén. The Vipers were currently third in the Norwegian league, which they had won for the past seven years.
