Thrilling Finish in International T20 League Opener
The inaugural match of the International T20 League witnessed an electrifying contest between Dubai Capitals (DC) and MI Emirates (MI). After electing to bat first, DC posted a modest total of 133 runs for 8 wickets in 20 overs. In response, MI Emirates fell short by a single run, managing only 132 runs.
MI Emirates’ Late Collapse
At one stage, MI Emirates seemed poised for victory, requiring only 16 runs from 15 deliveries. However, the team’s hopes were dashed as Kieron Pollard and Allah Ghazanfar struggled to score against Olly Stone’s tight bowling in the 19th over. Earlier, Gulbadin Naib had conceded just five runs in the 18th over, further increasing the pressure on MI Emirates. With 13 runs needed from the final over, 19-year-old Farhan Khan was entrusted with the ball. He delivered a remarkable over, yielding only 11 runs and securing a thrilling one-run victory for DC.
MI Emirates’ Challenging Chase
MI Emirates’ pursuit of 134 runs got off to a rocky start, with opener Mohammad Wasim dismissed for a duck. Kusal Perera (12) and Andre Fletcher (0) soon followed, leaving the team reeling at 23/4. Tom Banton’s brief innings of 7 runs only added to the woes. However, Nicholas Pooran and Akil Hussain staged a recovery, taking the score past 100. Pooran’s 61-run knock (40 balls, 3 fours, 4 sixes) was the highlight of the innings, while Akil Hussain contributed 30 runs (2 sixes). Kieron Pollard remained unbeaten on 16 runs (15 balls).
Dubai Capitals’ Batting Performance
Earlier, Brandon McMullen top-scored for Dubai Capitals with 58 runs, while Rovman Powell chipped in with 25 runs. Shai Hope (9), Sikandar Raza (10), Dasun Shanaka (13), and Gulbadin Naib (2) were the other contributors to the team’s total. Gulbadin Naib was the pick of the bowlers for DC, claiming three wickets for 13 runs in four overs.
