US Announces Additional Military Aid to Ukraine
US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin has announced a new package of military aid to Ukraine, valued at approximately $500 million. This announcement comes just days before the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump.
International Support for Ukraine
At a meeting of the “contact group” of Ukraine’s allies at Ramstein Air Base in Germany, Austin emphasized the importance of international support for Ukraine. “The Ukraine fight concerns us all,” he stated.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also addressed the meeting, highlighting the potential benefits of deploying Western troops in Ukraine. According to Zelensky, such a deployment could “force Russia” to sign a peace agreement. He described the deployment of partner contingents as “one of the best instruments” to achieve this goal.
North Korean Involvement in the Conflict
President Zelensky also discussed the involvement of North Korean troops in the conflict. He estimated that nearly 4,000 North Korean soldiers have been killed in the Russian region of Kursk, where they are fighting alongside Russian troops. Zelensky noted that the presence of North Korean military personnel in the conflict is evidence that Russian President Vladimir Putin is seeking to escalate the war, rather than pursue a peaceful resolution.
Call for Increased Pressure on Russia
Zelensky urged the United States and Europe to increase pressure on Putin through sanctions and additional military aid to Ukraine. This, he believes, is necessary to force Russia to end its military aggression against Ukraine.
According to intelligence reports, North Korea has sent approximately 11,000 soldiers to Russia, who have been engaged in combat with Ukrainian troops in the Kursk region since early November.
