Attack on the Presidential Precinct in N’Djamena, Chad
Gunfire was reported in N’Djamena, the capital of Chad, on Wednesday night, originating from the presidential precinct or its vicinity. A video captured in the dead of night showed several bodies shot by Chadian security forces, with initial indications suggesting the attack was carried out by Boko Haram terrorists.
Initial Speculations and Conspiracy Theories
Given the usual area of operations of Boko Haram, it seemed plausible that the attack was carried out by the terrorist group. Chadian President Mahamat Déby had launched an offensive against Boko Haram in November, causing significant damage to the group’s structure. Some voices on social media quickly linked the attack to the withdrawal of French troops from the country, fueling unsupported conspiracy theories.
Official Version of Events
However, in an appearance by the country’s Foreign Minister, Abderaman Koulamallah, held inside the presidential complex, a more bizarre reality was revealed. According to the official version, the attackers were traveling in one or two vehicles from a neighborhood in the capital, under the influence of drugs and alcohol, and armed with only machetes and knives. One of the vehicles broke down, forcing them to get off earlier than expected and walk a few meters. The attackers stabbed the four guards at the entrance to the presidential compound, killing one and wounding the other three, before being shot dead in the gardens.
Minister Koulamallah’s Statement
Minister Koulamallah concluded that “it is not likely” that the attack was carried out by terrorists, ruling out rumors attributing responsibility to Boko Haram. He stated that more details would be provided throughout the day.
Aftermath of the Attack
The final result of the attack was 27 dead and three injured.
