Establishing a New Foundation for Syria’s Future
The newly formed Syrian transitional government is set to establish a “preparatory committee” that will comprise representatives from all segments of society. This committee will play a crucial role in laying the groundwork for the National Dialogue Conference, which aims to shape the country’s future.
A Representative Committee
According to Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al Shaibani, the new government is awaiting the creation of this committee, which will welcome global representation from all components and provinces of Syria. The committee will serve as a foundation for establishing the country’s political identity and will be a significant step towards building a united state.
A Diverse and Inclusive Approach
The new Syrian administration, led by the Islamist Hayat Tahrir al Sham (HTS), has announced its intention to hold a national dialogue. Given the country’s diverse population, which includes Arabs, Assyrians, Kurds, Druze, Christians, and Shiite and Sunni Muslims, the authorities have opted to create a committee that includes both men and women from all segments of society.
A New Constitution and the Dissolution of Parliament
Media affiliated with the new Syrian authorities have reported that the national dialogue will initially announce the dissolution of Parliament. A committee of experts will be formed to draft a new Constitution, and HTS and “all other factions” will also be dissolved.
Challenges Ahead
Ahmed al Sharaa, the leader of HTS and Syria’s new strongman, has highlighted the difficulty of establishing a calendar for actions and elections due to the large number of people abroad as a result of the civil war. He estimates that the process of preparing and writing a new Constitution may take between two or three years, and organizing elections may take up to four years.
