Uncertainty Surrounds Test Careers of Senior Indian Players
The recent defeat in the Sydney Test has sparked concerns about the future of senior Indian players, particularly Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, in the Test format. The loss marked the end of India’s decade-long reign as the Border-Gavaskar Trophy champions. The five-match Test series, which took place from November 2024 to December 2025, concluded with Australia emerging victorious with a 3-1 scoreline.
Gautam Gambhir’s Take on the Situation
Indian team head coach Gautam Gambhir addressed the media after the Sydney Test, sharing his thoughts on the Test careers of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Gambhir emphasized that the decision to continue playing Test cricket lies with the players themselves. He also highlighted the importance of participating in domestic cricket to improve performance in the red ball format.
Gambhir stated, “I cannot comment on the future of any player. This is completely his personal decision. But yes, he still has the passion and hunger. He is a strong player. I hope he will give his best to take Indian cricket forward.” He further added, “I always want all the players, if available, to play domestic cricket. This is the best way to improve yourself in red ball cricket.”
Recent Performance of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli
In the past year, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have not performed up to expectations in Test cricket. Rohit scored a mere 164 runs in his last 15 Test innings, with only one half-century to his name. During the Australia tour, he managed just 31 runs in three Test matches, leading to his exclusion from the final Test.
Virat Kohli’s performance has also been underwhelming. He scored 382 runs in his last 19 Test innings, with one century and one half-century. Notably, Kohli was dismissed on balls outside the off stump six times out of seven during the Australia tour.
