Dakar Resurrects T2 Category with Land Rover Defender as Pioneer

The Resurgence of the T2 Category in the Dakar Rally

The Dakar Rally, one of the most prestigious off-road racing events, is set to witness the revival of the T2 category, also known as the modified production vehicles. This category, which was once a staple of the rally, had seen a decline in recent years, with only two units registered in the 47th edition of the Arab rally. However, with the official support of manufacturers, the T2 category is poised to make a comeback in the 2026 edition of the Dakar Rally.

Land Rover, a renowned manufacturer, has confirmed its participation in the T2 category, with the iconic Defender model set to make its debut. The company has partnered with Prodrive, a team that manages the Dacia Sandrider, to prepare the Defenders for the rally. According to Mark Cameron, director of Defender, and James Barclay, director of JLR Motorsport, the company is attracted to the fact that the car that the client can drive on the street competes in a scenario like the Dakar, making it a great marketing platform for their brand.

The power of the vehicles will be variable, adapting to the weight of each particular vehicle. Each manufacturer will be required to line up 10 cars, with a limit of 300,000 euros per vehicle.
