Mysterious Basketball Texture Emerges in Roig Arena’s Ceramic Facade

Progress on Valencia’s Multipurpose Venue

The construction of Valencia’s future multipurpose venue, the Roig Arena, is advancing steadily. The building’s façade is starting to take shape, featuring a unique ceramic slat covering that not only provides a distinctive design but also serves key functional purposes.

The ceramic slats, supplied by TAU Cerámica, boast a relief with dots that evoke the texture of a basketball, paying homage to the sport’s prominence in the venue, which will serve as the headquarters of Valencia Basket. The design, led by ERRE Architecture, incorporates two main layers in its external structure.

The first layer ensures thermal and acoustic insulation, while the second layer, composed of ceramic slats, serves a dual purpose: aesthetics and functionality. The slats are designed to block direct sunlight, enhancing energy efficiency and thermal comfort inside the building.

Installation Challenges and Progress

Currently, the installation work on the slats is focused on the west zone, one of the most challenging areas due to its cantilever and the integration of the exterior screen, known as the “eye,” located at the main entrance. This access will be connected to a large public park and an adjacent parking area.

Upon completion, the Roig Arena will feature a total of 8,600 slats covering its façade. The large-scale project is expected to become a reference space in Valencia for sporting, entertainment, and corporate events.

A Large-Scale Project

The Roig Arena is set to become a prominent venue in Valencia, with a maximum capacity of 20,000 people in concert mode. Construction, financed entirely by Juan Roig, president of Mercadona, has a budget exceeding 280 million euros. The venue is expected to begin operations in September 2025.
