Spanish Tennis Player Martin de la Puente Secures Spot in Wimbledon Wheelchair Tournament Final
Martin de la Puente, a Galician tennis player, has earned a spot in the wheelchair tournament final at Wimbledon after defeating Japanese top seed Tokito Oda 1-6, 6-3, and 6-3 in one hour and 48 minutes.
De la Puente, the world number four in wheelchair tennis, took advantage of his opportunities, sealing seven break points during the three sets. Oda, who had just won the 2024 Australian Open and Roland Garros, and was the world number one, committed 20 unforced errors, which ultimately decided the match.
De la Puente will face local idol Alfie Hewett in the final. Hewett, who has eight Grand Slams in singles and 20 in doubles, also came back in the semi-finals against Argentine Gustavo Fernandez (4-6, 6-4, and 7-5).
This will be an open fight to continue making history, as De la Puente aims to become the first member of the ‘Armada’ to win a wheelchair tennis Grand Slam, while Hewett seeks to complete his Grand Slam list with the British crown in the individual tournament.
