NBA Player Jontay Porter Pleads Guilty in Sports Betting Scandal
Former NBA player Jontay Porter has pleaded guilty to charges related to a sports betting scandal in a New York federal court. Porter was released on bail of $250,000 and his sentence will be announced on December 18.
Maximum Sentence: 20 Years in Prison
The maximum sentence Porter can face is 20 years in prison. The prosecution has proposed a sentence of around three or four years.
NBA Ban
In April, the NBA banned Porter for life for violating league rules. An internal NBA investigation revealed that Porter bet on league matches, which is restricted, and provided confidential information to others for betting purposes.
Investigation Timeline
The scandal broke out after the game between the Toronto Raptors and the Sacramento Kings on March 20. Porter, who retired due to illness after playing 2 minutes and 43 seconds, registered an unusual increase in bets for the "under" (betting that he would not reach certain figures). His "under" limits were 7.5 points and 5.5 rebounds.
Investigation Findings
The NBA investigation found that Porter, the brother of Denver Nuggets player Michael Porter Jr., withdrew from the game to influence the outcome of those bets. An acquaintance of Porter had bet $80,000 on the underdog, which would have earned him $1.1 million if the player’s participation had not been detected.
Further Investigation
Research on the NBA also revealed that between January and March 2024, Porter made 13 bets with an acquaintance’s account for a total investment of $54,094, from which he received a return of $76,059 and a profit of $21,965. In one of those bets, Porter put his money on a loss for the Raptors, his team. The Raptors lost that game.
