Shubman Gill has become India’s regular opener. He has been in charge of the opening together with captain Rohit Sharma for some time now. Gill is preferred as an opener in almost all three formats. But in the opening game in India, the T20 International has not gone as expected so far.
Despite scoring a century in the 12 T20 International matches played so far, Gill has not been able to achieve the same feat in the format as he has in ODIs. Last Tuesday (December 12), the Indian opener returned to the pavilion in the second T20 match against South Africa without opening his account. Gill was selected in the first eleven of the match opposite Ruturaj Gaikwad.
Gaikwad is in very good form. He had earlier scored a century in the T20 series against Australia but still had to warm up the bench in front of Gill in the second T20 against Africa.
Shubman Gill, who made his T20 International debut in January 2023, has played 12 matches in the format so far, batting in 12 innings, scoring 304 runs at an average of 27.63 and a strike rate of 145.45. During this period, he has scored a century and half-century with his bat. His high score is 126* runs.
Apart from that, if we look at Gill’s T20 innings individually, he doesn’t look that strong. So far Gill has scored runs in innings 07, 05, 46, 07, 11, 126*, 03, 07, 06, 77, 09, 00. It is clear to see that Gill failed to even exceed double figures in 8 out of 12 innings. However, this is still the early stages for Gill. But he needs to focus on T20I career.
