Shubhman Gill
Opening batsman Shubman Gill’s name is not included in the squad that announced the selection of the Indian team for the three-match ODI series to be played on the South Africa tour. However, Gill has definitely been included in the team for the T20 series considering the T20 World Cup will be held in 2024. This year, Shubman Gill’s bat could be seen speaking very well in ODI where he definitely set some new records although now he won’t be able to break Sachin Tendulkar’s big record.
Most runs in ODI in a calendar year
The record for most runs in a year in ODI format is held by Sachin Tendulkar, who scored 1894 runs in 1998 at an average of 65.31. With the form Gill has been in this year, everyone expected him to definitely break Sachin’s record but in the ODI World Cup, Gill couldn’t play in the first two matches. In 9 matches he managed to score only 354 runs at an average of 44.25. Since Gill was not picked for the ODI series against South Africa after that, it was decided that he cannot break this great record of Sachin now. Gill has scored 1584 runs in 29 innings in ODIs at an average of 63.36 so far this year and has also played five centuries and nine half-centuries during this time.
All eyes will be on Gill’s performance in the Test series
Team India also has to play a two-match Test series on the South Africa tour and in such a situation, all eyes will be on Shubman Gill’s performance. Gill scored his last Test century during the Test series against Australia earlier this year. Since then, Gill has failed to even cross the 50-run mark in five innings. On the West Indies tour, Gill was sent at number 3 in both matches played and is expected to be played at the same number in the Test series against South Africa.
