Chavista justice He arrested and jailed opponent Nelson Piñero for criticizing Maduro on his social networks. The leader of the Encuentro Ciudadano party, Delsa Solórzano, condemned the Venezuelan dictatorship with this legal action violates the exercise of freedom of expression.
Likewise, agents of the Bolivarian National Intelligence Service (SEBIN) arrested Piñero around midnight on Wednesday while he was at his home. Solórzano blamed Nicolás Maduro’s government, which he described as a dictatorship, “for the life and physical integrity” of the activist.
According to Solórzano, the first control court of the state of Caracobo, located west of Caracas, issued “a detention measure against our colleague Nelson Piñero”. “Obviously the exercise of freedom of expression is condemned here.”
The reason given at the hearing was that “Nelson has actually written on Twitter critical of the national government and of the local government of Carabobo State,” as the former lawmaker explained. For its part, the Chavista prosecutor’s office did not comment on the matter.
Several people have been arrested in recent years under the “Law against Hatred, for Peaceful Coexistence and Tolerance,” which was enacted by decree of the Constituent Assembly in 2017. The Chavista dictatorship demanded the creation of this law in order to put an end to the alleged messages of hate, intolerance and racism from opponents of the government.
“Writing on social networks is not a crime, expressing an opinion is not a crime and today a prison sentence was just imposed on a Venezuelan citizen simply for expressing his opinion on social networks.”added the political leader.
The group demanded information about its activist and, via the social network, alerted the United Nations agency, whose High Commissioner for Human Rights has a wide-ranging mission in the country, about the case, EFE said.
