How to clean your smartphone’s charging port

Knowing how to clean a phone’s charging port is a fundamental part of maintaining any smartphone. While many phones have wireless charging, damage to the charging port can lead to more than just cable issues.

Considering how often we use our phones, it’s understandable that all kinds of dust, dirt and pocket lint can end up in the charging port; after all, it is the most exposed part of the device.

That’s why it’s important to clean it regularly, but considering how expensive and delicate phones can be, you must not put anything in the port that could damage the electronic components it contains, metal objects or cleaning products, for example.

Instead, you should treat the charging port with care. Here’s how to clean a phone’s charging port.

How to clean phone charging port

For security reasons, make sure your phone is turned off before you start cleaning the port.

1. Insert a toothpick

Insert a toothpick into the charging port and gently move it from side to side. In order not to damage any components, make sure the toothpick is made of plastic or wood. Do not insert any metal utensil into the charging port.

2. Gently scrape the walls of the door with the toothpick

Gently scrape the toothpick from side to side. Make contact with the door walls to remove any dust or lint that may have accumulated inside and stuck to the walls.

3. Introduce compressed air into the port

Introduce compressed air into the port with a manual or mechanical pump. Use short bursts, and if it’s still not clear and/or you’re still having charging issues, alternate between compressed air and a toothpick.

After that, you’ll have a brand-new charging port.
