Reds top Pirates with solid outing from Aschraft

Graham Ashcraft pitched seven solid innings, Jason Vosler and TJ Friedly hit solo homers and the Cincinnati Reds beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-1 on Sunday.

Ashcraft (1-0) overcame Brian Reynolds’ home run and went seven innings, giving up four hits, one run and a walk with six strikeouts.

The right-hander had the longest outing by a Reds starter this young season as Cincinnati picked up its second straight win after losing on Day 1. Hunter Green pitched 3 1/3 innings Thursday and Nick Lodolo pitched five Saturday.

Tyler Stephenson also drove in a run and Vosler, Friedl and Jonathan India each had two hits for the Reds.

Alex Young and Derek Law rallied from two hits to start the inning and kept the score 3-1 in the eighth. Boricua Alex Díaz pitched the ninth for his first save.

Vince Velasquez (0-1), who made his Pirates debut after signing as a free agent in December, pitched 4 2/3 innings of five hits and three runs, one walk and three strikeouts.
