The Dominican Agribusiness Board (JAD) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) designed a biosafety certification system for pig farms in the Dominican Republic.
The institution reported that it has the technical support of Araporcei, a leading entity in inspection and certification of the agri-food sector of Spain.
Given the arrival of African swine fever in the country, the JAD took the initiative, with the support of FAO, to train more than 130 pig farmers, veterinarians and technicians from the provinces Espaillat, Santiago, La Vega, Hermanas Mirabal and Santo Domingo.
“The design of this protocol allows pig producers to prevent the entry and spread of infectious agents that may affect their production, while providing considerable benefits for production, safety and food safety, public health, public, animal welfare and, consequently, to the market and the economy”, of the pig sectorexplained Osmar C. Benítez, executive president of the JAD.
Available in terms of biosafety, applicable to all existing production systems in the country, such as the commercial production of pigs and for small and medium-sized farms.
Certification, issued by a third party, is currently an aspect that can clearly provide advantages and value to companies by helping to improve their processes, their products and their management systems and to strengthen their business opportunities.
Likewise, it can constitute a differentiating element in the market, which contributes to improving the image of the products and generates trust among clients, consumers and authorities.
