Data leak at Gemini: approximately 5.7 million emails leaked

The cryptocurrency exchange Gemini reportedly suffered a data breach on or before December 13 this year.

No personal information leaked

Hackers reportedly managed to access 5,701,649 lines of information related to, among other things, account numbers, email addresses and (partial) telephone numbers of Gemini customers.

The hackers gained access to a specific database of the crypto exchange. It is noteworthy that this database did not contain any personal information such as names, addresses and other Know-Your-Customer (KYC) information.

However, the consequences of the hack can potentially be significant. Trezor, which makes hardware wallets, experienced a similar incident earlier this year. Back then, in April, hackers gained access to Trezor users’ email addresses by hacking into a third-party newsletter provider and then used the targeted users in a phishing scam, leading to losses at the company.

It is not yet known whether the same will happen with Gemini, but at the moment it all seems to be not too bad.
