In Quebec, nurses denounce sexy Halloween costumes

On the occasion of the next Halloween party, the Order of Nurses of Quebec (OIIQ) launched Monday a vast campaign on social networks to fight against the sexy costumes created around the profession. According to them, these disguises convey a cliché that harms the image of their profession; reports The Huffington Post.

“The eroticization of the profession is unacceptable, socially and professionally. It is time for perceptions to change regarding nurses who practice a scientific profession,” declared Luc Mathieu, president of OIIQ, on Twitter. The spot broadcast by the Order encourages people who want to dress up as a nurse to wear a real outfit, with gloves, visor and regulatory gown, in order to pay tribute to this profession which has been particularly hard hit over the past two years.

An eroticization deemed demeaning

For the OIIQ, which also spoke in a press release published on October 24, this eroticization of nurses “devalues their profession and their expertise”. Luc Mathieu, therefore, regretted that stereotypes persist around this technical and essential profession in the functioning of health establishments.

“Nurses care for our world. Let’s take care of their image” sums up the spot. Among the costumes generally worn on Halloween, others have also been the subject of heated debate for several years, such as those relating to cultural appropriation. More recently, with the hit series Dahmer on Netflix, the costumes linked to real miscellaneous events have been denounced on social networks.
