Germany: Chancellor Olaf Scholz tested positive for Covid-19

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz tested positive for Covid-19 after returning from a tour of the Middle East, the government spokesperson announced on Monday (26 September).

The 64-year-old leader presented “mild symptoms” cold, before testing positive on Monday and going into solitary confinement in his chancellery apartment, according to Steffen Hebestreit. His appointments for the next few days will be held virtually, said the spokesperson.

The German Chancellor tested positive after returning from an express tour this weekend to Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, aimed in particular at finding new sources of energy supply for Germany. The United Arab Emirates and Germany notably signed an agreement on Sunday providing for the supply in 2022 and 2023 of liquefied gas (LNG) and diesel from this Gulf country to Berlin.
