Karim Benzema would be out of action for a very short time, after Real Madrid reported on Wednesday that the French striker suffered a tendon injury and an overload in the quadriceps in his right thigh.
Benzema had to be replaced 30 minutes into the Spanish side’s 3-0 win at Scottish hometown Celtic, making their debut in the Champions League group stage on Tuesday.
The reigning champions of Europe and Spain said that Benzema has an “injury to the semitendinosus muscle and an overload in the quadriceps, both in the right thigh.”
Madrid did not give a deadline for Benzema’s return, limiting itself to saying that it was “pending evolution”.
According to Spanish media, Benzema would miss a couple of weeks, so he could not be there for the visit to Atlético de Madrid on September 18. He would arrive in time to join his team that will play friendlies the week after heading to the World Cup in Qatar.
The 34-year-old attacker is coming off the best season of his career, in which he was the top scorer in both the Champions League and La Liga.
He scored 15 goals in the Champions League, some of which were decisive on the way to winning the 14th European Cup, a tournament record harvest.
